Setting up a device

A device is set up once, by somebody in the shop administration, and afterwards it belongs to the warehouse until it is revoked. Nothing is typed on the device itself except a PIN.

Enrolling the device

Warehouses → Terminals → Add terminal opens a two-step dialog.

Step one, What it is, describes the device: its name, what kind of work happens on it, the bench it stands at if it stands at one, and the warehouse it is in. A device that packs may also be given an operator under Signs in as, which suits a bench nobody carries away and is deliberately not offered for a handheld that passes from hand to hand.

Step two shows a QR code and, under it, the same code in letters for a device whose camera cannot read it. The code is valid for fifteen minutes and works once, so a second device scanning the same code is refused and needs a code of its own.

On the device:

1. Open the terminal address in the browser, or point the phone’s own camera app at the code. Most phones read a QR code straight from the camera, or from the QR scanner in the notification shade, with nothing to install: the phone offers the address the code carries, and tapping it opens the app.
2. If the app is already open on the sign-in screen, use Scan enrolment code and hold the code in view. Or type the code shown under the QR does the same thing by hand.
3. The app says Setting up… and then asks who is working.

If the device has not been enrolled, the app says Not a terminal yet and names the remedy: Open Terminals in the shop administration, add this device, and scan the code it shows.

Caution

The camera needs a secure (https) address. On an http shop the browser will not open it at all, and the app states this. The phone’s own camera app can be pointed at the code instead, which opens the app and sets the device up without the in-app scanner.

Roles: what a device is for

The role decides what the device is offered, never what its operator is allowed to do. It is chosen once and fixed afterwards: the credentials, the open shift and the shop behind a device belong to the purpose it was created for, so a device whose job changes is revoked and enrolled again rather than edited.

A device with no role set is not restricted; it offers everything its operator is allowed to do.

Till is the one role that changes what the app is rather than what it offers: a counter loads none of the picking and packing screens, and a warehouse terminal loads none of the counter ones. A till is asked for the Shop it sells for instead of a bench, because the sales channel decides prices, tax and numbering. → Selling at the till

Giving an operator a PIN

The app signs in a person. Their PIN is set in the shop administration on their own user card: Settings → System → Users & permissions → select user → the Stockly PIN field.

Until at least one operator can be offered, the app’s sign-in screen displays No operator can sign in here yet: the setup is not complete. The steps are in the documentation, under Terminal app - Setting up a device.

Caution

A PIN gets a person to the sign-in screen; it does not decide what they may do afterwards. Their role needs the Work on a warehouse terminal (everything a picking and packing shift needs) privilege, otherwise the first action on the terminal is refused. → Privileges

Signing in and out

The sign-in screen asks Who is working?, shows the operators who have a PIN, and takes the PIN on a keypad. A wrong one says That PIN did not work. Try again, or ask for it to be reset.

Sign out is in the menu, under This device. It ends the person’s session and leaves the device enrolled, so the next operator gets the PIN pad rather than the setup dialog.

If a session expires by itself the app says Your session has ended. Sign in again.

Installing it as an app

On a device that supports it, the menu offers Install app, after which the terminal opens like any other app on the device, without browser chrome. On iPhone and iPad the browser does not offer this, so the app explains the manual route: To install: tap Share, then “Add to Home Screen”.

Fill the screen in the same menu hides the browser bars without installing anything.

Taking a device out of service

Warehouses → Terminals lists the devices. The row menu offers Enrolment code for a device that needs setting up again, and Revoke credentials for one that should stop working, such as a lost handheld or a bench that was replaced. A device whose credentials were taken away asks to be enrolled again the next time it is opened.
