Print queue

Stockly → Operations → Printing → Print queue is every job the module has been handed.

Columns: Created, Order, Source, Printer, Format, Copies, Status, Attempts, Error.

Jobs appear as soon as a shipping module or a document rule hands over a label, and whenever an automatic printing rule asks for a document.

Source says where the job came from. It shows the short name the sending part of the module uses rather than a formatted label: a pick list queued by a rule arrives as pick-wave, a sheet somebody asked for by pressing a print button as operation-manual, a batch handed to a driver as handover.

Waiting — nobody has taken it yet. If it stays there, either no computer that can reach that device has the administration open, or the printer is not assigned to the operator’s station. Open the printer icon in the top bar: it says which devices this computer is collecting for.

Sending — a worker or a browser has taken it. Left unacknowledged it goes back to waiting on its own, after the delay set in the settings.

Sent to printer — the bytes left. That is not a promise that paper came out: a raw network port never reports back.

Failed — the reason is in the row, and Show full error opens it in full. Fix the cause, then Print again.

On hold — parked deliberately, waiting for someone to release it.

Cancelled — dropped by hand.

No printer assigned in the Printer column is the queue saying it could not choose. Three things lead to it:

  • more than one device would have fitted, and picking one at random is worse than asking;
  • two equally specific default printers both matched; a tie is answered with a question, not by row order;
  • a printer was named outright, but it does not take this kind of data or does not carry the stock type the job asked for.

Set the printer on the row and it prints.

Row menu: Print again, Cancel, Show full error. Selecting rows gives the same two as bulk actions: Print again and Cancel selected.

Finished jobs are removed after the retention period in the settings. Failed ones are kept: they are unfinished business, not history.

  1. Open the printer icon in the top bar. Greyed out means the local print service is not answering.
  2. Check what the panel says it is collecting for; a device that is not listed will never be served from this computer.
  3. A job stuck on Sending clears itself; wait for the release delay rather than retrying.
  4. A Failed job carries its reason. A PDF sent to a label printer is the common one; see document rules.
